The fourth of California’s missions, Mission San Garbriel was founded on September 8, 1771, under the presidency of St. Junipero Serra. The original site of the Mission was along the west bank of the San Gabriel River (today's Rio Hondo) in the Whittier Narrows. Flooding from the watercourse forced a relocation to the current site.
We will visit the San Gabriel Mission for a special tour. Dr. Steven Hackel, our March 11th presenter, will meet us at the mission and provide input about the new museum and its greater focus on the lives of indigenous people.
This event has a $20 fee and includes entrance to the Mission and a snack. Contact Sherry Best at (909) 596-4679 or sbest@lavernehistoricalsociety.org to reserve your seat. Fees are due at the time of boarding. All are welcome
