Join Inland Valley Repertory Theatre for a Virtual “Coney Island Christmas”

Inland Valley Repertory Theatre company (IVRT) is pleased to announce the opening of “Coney Island Christmas presented as a livestream online
Director Frank Minano said, “IVRT, like so many local theatres, is being innovative during the pandemic and offering a readers theatre experience so that audiences may still enjoy good theatre in the comfort and safety of their home. This is not Zoom, rather a presentation that is as accessible as one mouse click.”
About the play:
Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music and merriment in this new seasonal classic. A holiday show for people of all ages and all faiths, CONEY ISLAND CHRISTMAS introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who (much to her immigrant parents’ exasperation) is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant, because she has “the loudest voice. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter, the play captures a timeless and universal tale of what it means to be an American during the holidays.
This play features the talents of Cindi East as Shirley Abramowitz; Spencer Weitzel as Mr. Hilton the drama teacher; Lauren Bell Nagy as Miss Glace, the music teacher; and introducing Moira Mitchell as Young Shirley and Carolina Flores as Clara, Shirley’s great-granddaughter, along with a talented cast of thirteen performers. Elementary choir students from Camp IVRT will provide their beautiful, uplifting vocals to this amazing holiday spectacular. Mr. Weitzel, in addition to acting, is a filmmaker who will be designing and editing the virtual performance.
“I get to teach the songs to the children in our arts education program and they are excited about being in the part of the play that goes back in time to 1935,” said Donna Marie Minano, executive directorThe exciting thing for me is that four of our former Camp IVRT students are playing the larger roles of Young Shirley’s friends.  I so appreciate the funding we receive from the Claremont Educational Foundation and the State of California for our arts education programs because it’s programs like these that help shape our youth and give them experiences they cherish for a lifetime.
