City of La Verne Launches Innovative Business Assistance For Crime Reduction Program

The City of La Verne is proud to announce the initiation of the “Business Assistance for Crime Reduction” (BACR) program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to enhance the safety and security of the city's business community. Launched on February 20, 2024, under the guidance of the City Council, the BACR program aims to foster a secure commercial environment through strategic partnerships, advanced technology, and innovative crime prevention techniques.

The BACR program is a direct response to recent crime patterns, such as "smash and grabs" targeting retail fronts, and represents a comprehensive strategy to protect La Verne's economic vitality. By integrating informed design of spaces, defensible space theory, smart city technologies, and a community-focused approach, the program sets a new standard for business safety.
Mayor Tim Hepburn underscored the initiative's significance, stating, "The safety of our community and the protection of our local businesses are paramount. The BACR program not only enhances the security of our commercial areas but also reinforces our commitment to creating a safe, vibrant, and prosperous La Verne for everyone. It is through innovative solutions like this that we continue to safeguard the well-being of our residents and business owners."

Chief of Police Sam Gonzalez, highlighting the program's innovative aspects, remarked, "The BACR program represents a leap forward in our approach to crime prevention. By leveraging the latest in technology, urban design, and community engagement, we're not just reacting to crime—we're anticipating and preventing it. This program is a testament to our dedication to not only keeping La Verne safe but also to setting an example for others to follow."
Funded by the reallocation of $50,000 from the canceled 2024 municipal election, the BACR program includes a range of components such as Target Hardening, a Secure Your Business Brochure, and a Business Watch Program. These elements are designed to empower business owners with the knowledge and tools needed to safeguard their enterprises, contributing to a stronger, more resilient La Verne.

As the program rolls out over the next two years, regular evaluations will ensure its effectiveness and adaptability, with the ultimate goal of reducing crime rates and enhancing the quality of life for the City’s business community and its patrons.
